Kelsey Hummel M.D.

Founder and pathologist

Dr. Kelsey Hummel is pathologist board certified in anatomic, clinical, and cytopathology, and works as a staff pathologist at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI, USA. She went to medical school at Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating with a doctorate in osteopathic medicine in 2019. She completed her pathology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, USA, and then her cytopathology fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the same city. She finished her last fellowship in gynecologic pathology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, USA. Her professional interests include medical education, global health, and pathology outreach.

Founder and pathologist

Dr. Daniel Rosen is a board-certified pathologist in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology with over 25 years of experience. Trained initially in Argentina, he developed expertise in digital imaging for pathology and later advanced cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he pioneered ovarian carcinoma tissue microarrays and proteomics. He completed his pathology training at Baylor College of Medicine and then a breast pathology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is currently a Professor of pathology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers with more than 4,000 citations. His research focuses on in vivo microscopy, low-cost telepathology technologies, and global health initiatives.

Joe Knapper Ph.D.

Dr Joe Knapper has been a full-time developer on the OpenFlexure Microscope project since 2019, focusing on automation and usability to make advanced imaging tools accessible worldwide. His PhD was in developing the automation of the detection of malaria parasites on the OpenFlexure Microscope. Joe collaborates with medical doctors and engineers across the globe to ensure the microscope meets the needs of diverse communities and laboratory environments. He has supported deployments in Tanzania, Brazil, and Rwanda, acting as the bridge between users and developers. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow, Joe has shared his work at international forums including the Norwegian Nanoscience Symposium, the Microscopy Society of Ireland Annual Conference, and the College of American Pathologists Foundation House of Delegates Meeting.
